Over the last few years, billions of dollars have been poured into producing cutting-edge autonomous vehicle technology. Big bets have been placed in the form of massive investments and acquisitions. Great progress has been quickly made and now the challenges are centered around data. The future is clearly about data, but we’re being left behind. The silos of autonomous vehicle development are concentrating.
Just because automakers and tech companies are partnering doesn’t mean more open collaboration. What we need to do is build the largest open data ecosystem for autonomous vehicles.
It’s important we act on this now because we’ll have the opportunity to significantly influence as to what AI engines are powered with and how they can be implemented for our collective benefit.
Enter the largest open data set
So imagine an open data exchange in which participants have access to data that was largely unavailable. It’s an opportunity for people to be compensated for contributing valuable data sets while simultaneously building an infrastructure that favors the many, rather than the few.
A few obstacles, however, stand in the way, but by no means aren’t impossible to overcome.
How do we make sure people don’t submit useless data?What if people take more than they give?
To solve both problems the people need to be incentivized for them to contribute. This is done by requiring participants to first submit data before being allowed to take anything. The community can also vote on submitted datasets to ensure anything being submitted can actually be of use.
It’s obvious that an open data ecosystem will generate more intelligence for self-driving cars than the current way we’re doing things.
The ultimate benefit is that people will have the opportunity to speed up the rate at which they can create innovative autonomous vehicle technology because they have access to a variety of powerful data.
